Evaline Hart Kirkland
Savannah- Evaline Hart Kirkland, 102, of Savannah, and formerly of Atlanta went home Wednesday, December 20, 2006, at Tara Nursing Home.
She was born in Dubois, Pennsylvania to Mildred and Benjamin Hart, however she never claimed any Northern connections and was a true Southern Lady. The family moved to South Carolina while she was very young. She considered Bennettsville, South Carolina “home”. Her father was a contractor and builder, having built many public and private structures in South Carolina.
Evaline moved to Atlanta as a young woman where she worked as a dental hygienist and assisted with Dr. William Billy Garrett. There she also met Talley Kirkland, a young lawyer whom she married.
During World War II, she served as an air raid warden in the Buckhead area of Atlanta, and her husband as a volunteer fireman.
With the birth of her only child in 1943 she became a full-time mother and homemaker. Later she joined her husband in his law office and worked as both legal secretary and office manager. She continued working with “Pop” until his death in 1979.
After closing the law office, she retired to her Parkside Drive residence where she continued to live, supported by many friends, neighbors, and family until at the age of 92, she was forced to give up the family home and move to assisted living in Savannah where she continued to take care of most of her personal business with loving help from her daughter-in-law.
She was very active in First Presbyterian Church of Atlanta and member of several women’s church organizations. Even after moving to Savannah she remained closed to this church. While in Savannah, Dr. Williams of First Presbyterian of Savannah visited her often.
She is the fifth of eight children and is survived by her sister Louise as well as a son and daughter-in-law Talley and Mary Ellen Kirkland of Savannah, two grandchildren and a number of nieces and nephews.
Graveside Service: 11:00 a.m. on Friday, December 22, at Dry Creek Baptist Church, Hall Family Cemetery in Nicholls, Georgia.
